Three Navistar Facilities Achieve Coveted ISO 14001 Certification for Environmental Management Systems

CHICAGO, Dec. 13 -- In another demonstration of its environmental leadership, Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV) today announced that three of its manufacturing facilities have received ISO 14001 certification. ISO 14001 is a worldwide environmental management standard under which independent auditors first certify and then periodically evaluate environmental processes and system performance.

The three Navistar facilities are its Melrose Park (Illinois) engine plant and technical center, and its engine plant and foundry operations, both in Indianapolis.

"Our continuing commitment to environmental improvement and protection is an integral part of doing business today, and I'm very pleased that these three engine group plants are setting the pace," said John R. Horne, Navistar's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Horne also pointed out that Navistar achieved the ISO 14001 certification "more than two full years before the engine group's largest customer, Ford Motor Company, had required it from all its suppliers with manufacturing facilities".

Horne further stated that Navistar is dedicated to achieving ISO 14001 certification by the end of 2002 for all of its manufacturing facilities producing trucks, engines and school buses, the three core lines of business for the company.

In 1991 the Navistar board of directors approved and published an Environmental Protection Policy to guide the company. Since 1992 the company has received 35 environmental awards and recognition from outside entities, ranging from state and local governments, to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Canadian Ministry of Environment, and various recycling and water reclamation organizations.

Navistar is also a leader in engine products that are sensitive to the environment through its long-time commitment to Green Diesel Technology(SM), which over the years has brought to market electronic engine controls and innovative fuel system technology that have lead the industry in contributing to clean air goals.

Navistar International Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, is a leading producer of heavy and medium trucks and school buses, and mid-range diesel engines sold under the International® brand. The company is also a private label designer and manufacturer of diesel engines for the truck and van markets. Sales and revenues in fiscal 1999 totaled $8.6 billion.
